Article Synopsis
  • The Nix-TB clinical trial tested a new 6-month TB treatment called the BPaL regimen, which includes bedaquiline, pretomanid, and linezolid, achieving a 90% cure rate in drug-resistant TB patients, but caused severe side effects due to linezolid.
  • Researchers propose substituting linezolid with inhaled spectinamide 1599 to create the BPaS regimen, which shows similar effectiveness as the BPaL regimen while reducing adverse events.
  • In animal studies, the BPaS regimen demonstrated equivalent bactericidal effects with fewer side effects like weight loss and anemia compared to BPaL, suggesting inhaled spectinamide has a superior safety profile in

This article describes a community collaborative project, "I've got yer back," that utilized the craft of needle felting to raise awareness and develop understanding of the anatomy of the human spine. The project took place in 2023 and engaged with participants from across the United Kingdom and abroad and its completion was timed to coincide with National Back Health Awareness week in October 2023. We describe the process of creating a vertebra using needle felt and examine how the particularities of the process and the use of the sense of touch helped participants notice and understand the complex form of the human vertebra.

Neuroanatomy is a notoriously challenging subject for medical students to learn. Due to the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, anatomical education transitioned to an online format. We assessed student performance in, and attitudes toward, an online neuroanatomy assessment compared to an in-person equivalent, as a marker of the efficacy of remote neuroanatomy education.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability affects symbiotic nitrogen fixation in eight different legume species.
  • N addition increases the mobilization of phosphorus in the soil but can lead to a decrease in root biomass and non-structural carbohydrates, negatively impacting nitrogen fixation rates.
  • Legumes that maintain stable nitrogen to phosphorus ratios are better able to sustain their nitrogen fixation capabilities despite changes in nutrient availability.
