Curcumin, a small molecule derived from the plant Curcuma longa, is a pleiotropic agent with widely varying pharmacological activities attributed to it. In addition to its anti-cancer activity curcumin is also known to be cytotoxic upon photoactivation. Time-lapse DIC and correlative fluorescence microscopy were used to evaluate the effects of curcumin, combined with continuous exposure to visible light, on cellular components of RTG-2 cells.

Rodlet cells are unique pear-shaped cells found primarily in the epithelium of the teleost fishes. The rodlet cell was first identified by Thèlohan in 1892 who named it Rhabdospora thelohani as it was believed to be a protozoan parasite of the phylum Apicomplexa. The rodlet cell as parasite paradigm persisted for several decades afterwards but has since faded in the last 20 years or so.

Thinlip mullet Chelon ramada is the most abundant mullet species found in the Comacchio lagoons (northern Adriatic Sea, Italy). Histological and ultrastructural sections of the intestine of C. ramada showed that over 83% of 48 mullets were infected with the intestinal parasite Myxobolus mugchelo (Myxozoa).
