Prevention of G-Induced Effects on Vision and Consciousness During Simulated Suborbital Spaceflight.

Introduction: During centrifuge-simulated suborbital spaceplane flights, launch and re-entry frequently cause visual symptoms, and G-induced loss of consciousness can occur. G-related effects may be more prominent during re-entry from microgravity on actual flights. A modified anti-G maneuver that does not involve a breath strain and is suitable for members of the public may be effective against these effects.

The Phonological Mapping Negativity (PMN) as a language-specific component: Exploring responses to linguistic vs musical mismatch.

The Phonological Mismatch Negativity (PMN) is an ERP component said to index the processing of phonological information, and is known to increase in amplitude when phonological expectations are violated. For example, in a context that generates expectation of a certain phoneme, the PMN will become relatively more negative if the phoneme is switched for an alternative. The response is comparable to other temporally-proximate components, insofar as it indicates a neurological response to unexpected auditory input, but remains considered distinct by the field on the basis of its proposed specific sensitivity to phonology.

Individual phenotypic variability in the behaviour of an aggregative riverine fish is structured along a reactive-proactive axis.

High phenotypic diversity should provide populations with resilience to environmental change by increasing their capacity to respond to changing conditions. The aim of this study was to identify whether there is consistency in individual behaviours on a reactive-proactive axis in European barbel Barbus barbus ("barbel"), a riverine and aggregatory fish that expresses individual differences in its behaviours in nature. This was tested using three sequential experiments in ex-situ conditions that required individuals to leave a shelter and then explore new habitats ('open-field test'), respond to social stimuli ('mirror-image stimulation test') and forage ('foraging behaviour test'; assessing exploratory traits).

Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial to Reduce Susceptibility to Tobacco Use Among School Going Adolescents in a South-Indian District-(Project TEACH).

Background: Adolescents are susceptible to using tobacco because of early exposure to tobacco through family members, easy access, or peer pressure. School-based educational programs are crucial for raising awareness of the harms of tobacco, thus preventing its uptake among adolescents. Studies conducted recently have recognized the need to bring change and reinforce ongoing school-based anti-tobacco education programs.

Coexistence mechanisms and individual trophic niche variation between functionally analogous non-native and native carp species.

Understanding the mechanisms that promote coexistence between functionally analogous non-native and native species that share similar prey is important for predicting the ecological consequences of their competitive interactions. Theory predicts that species coexistence is facilitated by stabilizing mechanisms that enhance inter-specific trophic niche partitioning, and/ or the equalizing mechanisms that reduce differences in the average fitness. Inter-specific niche partitioning, influenced by the ecological opportunity in prey resources, also affects intra-specific niche partitioning and individual niche expansion.
