Ultracold atoms exquisitely controlled by lasers are the quantum foundation, particularly for sensing, timekeeping, and computing, of state-of-the-art quantum science and technology. However, the laboratory-scale infrastructure for such optical-atomic quantum apparatus rarely translates into commercial applications. A promising solution is miniaturizing the optical layouts onto a chip-scale device integrated with cold atoms inside a compact ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber.

We have designed and implemented an approach for three-dimensional (3D) structured illumination (SI) microscopy (SIM) based on a quasi-monochromatic extended source illuminating a Wollaston prism to improve robustness, light efficiency and flexibility over our previous design. We show through analytical and experimental verification of the presented theoretical framework for our proposed tunable structured illumination microscopy (TSIM) system, that a simple and accurate determination of the axial modulation of the SI pattern is achieved, enabling a realistic characterization of the system's effective optical transfer function (OTF). System performance as a function of the extended source size is investigated with simulations.

In the field of artificial intelligence (AI) one of the main challenges today is to make the knowledge acquired when performing a certain task in a given scenario applicable to similar yet different tasks to be performed with a certain degree of precision in other environments. This idea of knowledge portability is of great use in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) that face important challenges in terms of reliability and autonomy. This article presents a CPS where unmanned vehicles (drones) are equipped with a reinforcement learning system so they may automatically learn to perform various navigation tasks in environments with physical obstacles.

The great geometric complexity that additive manufacturing allows in parts, together with the possibility of combining several materials in the same part, establishes a new design and manufacturing paradigm. Despite the interest of many leading sectors, the lack of standardization still makes it necessary to carry out characterization work to enjoy these advantages in functional parts. In many of these techniques, the process does not end with the end of the machine cycle, but different post-processing must be carried out to consider the part finished.

We experimentally realize a spin-momentum lattice with a homogeneously trapped Fermi gas. The lattice is created via cyclically rotated atom-laser couplings between three bare atomic spin states, and are such that they form a triangular lattice in a synthetic spin-momentum space. We demonstrate the lattice and explore its dynamics with spin- and momentum-resolved absorption imaging.
