A spectacular diversity of forms and features allow species to thrive in different environments, yet some structures remain relatively unchanged. Insect compound eyes are easily recognizable despite dramatic differences in visual abilities across species. It is unknown whether distant insect species use similar or different mechanisms to pattern their eyes or what types of genetic changes produce diversity of form and function.

Developing an adaptive paediatric intensive care unit platform trial with key stakeholders: a qualitative study.

Objectives: Platform trials were used successfully in adult populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. By testing multiple treatments within a single trial, platform trials can help identify the most effective treatments (and any interactions between treatments) for patients more quickly and with less burden for patients and their families. The aim of this qualitative research was to inform the design of the first adaptive platform trial for paediatric intensive care in the UK with young people, parents/carers and paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) staff.

Active and passive organic carbon fluxes during a bloom in the Southern Ocean (South Georgia).

The Controls Over Mesopelagic Interior Carbon Storage (COMICS) cruise DY086 took place aboard the RRS Discovery in the South Atlantic during November and December, 2017. Physical, chemical, biogeochemical and biological data were collected during three visits to ocean observatory station P3, off the coast of South Georgia, during an austral spring bloom. A diverse range of equipment including CTD-rosette, Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), net deployments, marine snow catchers (MSCs), Stand Alone Pump System (SAPS) and PELAGRA Sediment Traps were used to produce a comprehensive, high-quality dataset.

Unlocking the promise of UK health data: considering the case for a charitable GP data trust.

The UK National Health Service general practice (GP) patient data constitute a rich research resource, but collecting, managing, and sharing patient data present challenges. In May 2021, to address these challenges, substantial changes to the system for processing pseudonymized GP patient data in England were announced. As part of an opt-out process, patient consent to sharing GP data was deemed to have been given.

These technologies promise to enhance the efficiency and quality of care through improved patient health information management. Despite the transformative potential of EHRs, the extent to which patient access contributes to increased engagement with health care services within different clinical setting remains a distinct and underexplored facet.
