Thick metamorphic buffers are considered indispensable for III-V semiconductor heteroepitaxy on large lattice and thermal-expansion mismatched silicon substrates. However, III-nitride buffers in conventional GaN-on-Si high electron mobility transistors (HEMT) impose a substantial thermal resistance, deteriorating device efficiency and lifetime by throttling heat extraction. To circumvent this, a systematic methodology for the direct growth of GaN after the AlN nucleation layer on six-inch silicon substrates is demonstrated using metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE).

Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is a human brain infection caused by with a 97% mortality rate. Quinazolinones resulting from a Mannich-coupled domino rearrangement were recently identified as inhibitors of the amoeba. Herein, we resolved the effective concentrations for 25 pilot compounds and then, using the Mannich protocol and a key late-stage, -demethylation/functionalization, we synthesized 53 additional analogs to improve potency, solubility and microsomal stability.

In the 465,000 km Canadian Prairies ecozone, robust hydrological input data for hydraulic model applications are uncommon because of the sparse monitoring network and the intermittently connected stream network. New hydrological datasets can offer a valuable advancement for making water management decisions and designing infrastructure in this water stressed region. The Prairie Hydrology Design and Analysis Product (PHyDAP) was created to address existing limitations, and provides a comprehensive regional dataset for use in hydraulic modelling applications.
