A synapse-specific refractory period for plasticity at individual dendritic spines.

How newly formed memories are preserved while brain plasticity is ongoing has been a source of debate. One idea is that synapses which experienced recent plasticity become resistant to further plasticity, a type of metaplasticity often referred to as saturation. Here, we probe the local dendritic mechanisms that limit plasticity at recently potentiated synapses.

Selection of GABA-Producing Lactic Acid Bacteria Strains by Polymerase Chain Reaction Using Novel B and C Multispecies Primers for the Development of New Functional Foods.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) has been attributed to health-promoting properties and has received attention from the food industry as an attractive bioactive compound for the development of functional foods. Some lactic acid bacteria (LAB) produce GABA through a glutamate decarboxylase encoded by B and a glutamate/GABA antiporter encoded by C. In this study, we develop a molecular screening method based on a polymerase chain reaction able to detect those genes in different LAB species through the use of novel multispecies primers.

Associated factors and quality of life in women with urinary incontinence in southern Peru, 2023.

Background: Urinary incontinence (UI), which can be classified as stress, urgency, or mixed, represents a public health problem that mainly affects adult women. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, association of sociodemographic and obstetric factors with the types of UI as well as the perceived impact on quality of life of women attending primary health facilities in the Tacna region from Peru.

Methods: A quantitative, non-experimental, correlational, and cross-sectional study was conducted.

The royal ferns (Osmundales) are a morphologically diverse group of leptosporangiate ferns, the fossil record of which dates back to the Permian. Despite there being numerous described permineralized species, the phylogenetic relationships between extinct species remain contentious. Although several analytical approaches have been applied to infer well-resolved phylogenetic hypotheses-even methods that are arguably conceived to be better at dealing with data conflict and uncertainty, many taxa have not been assigned to specific taxonomic categories.

Main and Interactive Effects of Negative Posttraumatic Cognitions and Disgust Sensitivity in Predicting Daily Experiences of Sexual Trauma-Related Mental Contamination.

Trauma-related mental contamination, or a sense of dirtiness occurring without recent contact with a contaminant, is a distressing and often persistent phenomenon after sexual trauma. Following sexual trauma, cross-sectional work has demonstrated separate positive associations between mental contamination and 1) negative posttraumatic cognitions about oneself, the world, and/or self-blame and 2) disgust sensitivity - defined as the extent to which one is prone to distress when experiencing disgust. However, existing work has been primarily restricted to cross-sectional designs and has yet to consider the potential moderating role of disgust sensitivity in associations between negative posttraumatic cognitions and persistent mental contamination.
