Background: Brown-Séquard syndrome (BSS) is a rare neurological condition characterized by injury to one-half of the spinal cord. In the context of trauma, BSS is typically seen with penetrating injuries. Here, the authors present the unique case of a patient presenting with BSS after blunt trauma.

Frailty and social network among older Brazilian adults: evidence from ELSI-Brazil.

To investigate the elements of the social network associated with frailty syndrome in older Brazilian adults. Baseline data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil, 2015-2016) were used. Frailty was defined by the Fried phenotype (unintentional weight loss, exhaustion, weakness, slowness, and low level of physical activity).

Use of convalescent plasma in COVID-19 treatment: is clinical severity more important than the intervention?

Objective: This study compared the outcomes of two cohorts of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who received COVID-19 convalescent plasma transfusions between 2020 and 2021.

Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. We included a retrospective cohort of patients who received convalescent compassionate plasma, and another group of patients from a previous clinical study.

Approaches to Filipino American Community Engagement in Prevention Research: A Scoping Review.

The topic of this scoping review is the use of targeted engagement methods to engage Filipino Americans (FAs) in prevention research studies. FAs are the third largest Asian subgroup in the United States. Given the historical relationship between the Philippines and United States, FAs are often under-represented in research and are hard to reach due to factors such as cultural mistrust, linguistic mismatch, and unfamiliarity with research.
