Article Synopsis
  • The stretch reflex is a key part of movement, involving muscle spindles that detect tension changes and trigger muscle contractions via nerve signals in the spinal cord.
  • Researchers have discovered a unique type of macrophage in muscle spindles that can produce and release glutamate, enhancing communication between sensory neurons and muscles.
  • Silencing these macrophages disrupts the stretch reflex and affects locomotion in mice, suggesting that they play a crucial role in sensory feedback and movement regulation, with potential implications for new treatments in movement disorders.

Objectives: Prone positioning (PP) has benefits in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. The objective of this study was to compare the effects and complications of PP in obese versus non-obese patients with moderate-to-severe acute respiratory distress syndrome after cardiothoracic surgery.

Methods: We retrospectively analysed a database established in 2014-2021 in an intensive care unit.

Gastrointestinal first-pass metabolism plays an important role in bioavailability and in drug-drug interactions. Physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling is a powerful tool to integrate these processes mechanistically. However, a correct bottom-up prediction of GI first-pass metabolism is challenging and depends on various model parameters like the level of enzyme expression and the basolateral intestinal mucosa permeability (P).

Many virus types affect the blood clotting system with correlations to pathology that range widely from thrombosis to hemorrhage linking to inflammation. Here we overview the intricate crosstalk induced by infection between proteins on the virus encoded by either the host or virus genomes, coagulation proteins, platelets, leukocytes, and endothelial cells. For blood-borne viruses with an outer covering acquired from the host cell, the envelope, a key player may be the cell-derived trigger of coagulation on the virus surface, tissue factor (TF).

Objective: Current literature reports conflicting findings regarding the effect of diabetes mellitus (DM) on outcomes of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. In this study we examined the effect of DM and its management on outcomes after open AAA repair (OAR) and endovascular AAA repair (EVAR).

Methods: We identified all patients undergoing OAR or EVAR for infrarenal AAA between 2003 and 2018 in the Vascular Quality Initiative registry data linked with Medicare claims.
