We have investigated the regio- and stereoselective metabolism of phenanthrene by the liver microsomes of brown bullhead (Ameriurus nebulosus), a bottom dwelling fish species. The liver microsomes from untreated and 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC)-treated brown bullheads metabolized phenanthrene at a rate of 14.1 and 20.

The liver microsomes from untreated and 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC)-treated brown bullheads metabolized chrysene at the rate of 30.1 and 82.

The disposition and metabolism of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzofuran (TCDF) was investigated in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in order to better understand the metabolic and physiological factors that modulate the fate of this extremely toxic compound in rainbow trout compared to other species. The fish were dosed orally with [3H]TCDF (1 microgram/kg); fish were terminated at 1-19 days for the determination of whole body half-life or at 0.3-28 days for determination of tissue distribution.

In 1969 Innes et al. reported that 9% of 127 industrial chemicals and pesticides (including 7 positive controls) tested in a mouse bioassay were carcinogenic by oral administration. This is much lower than the prevalence of approximately 50% that has been found recently by the cancer bioassays conducted under the aegis of the U.

A study was conducted to assess the effects of riboflavin deficiency and riboflavin supplementation on carcinogen-DNA binding. After 12 wk on a riboflavin-sufficient or a riboflavin-deficient diet male Wistar rats were administered 3H-labelled benzo[a]pyrene (BP) ip. [3H]BP was given either at a uniform dose of 450 muCi/rat irrespective of body weight or at a dose adjusted to body weight.
