Global change alters coastal plankton food webs by promoting the microbial loop: An inverse modelling and network analysis approach on a mesocosm experiment.

Marine organisms are currently, and will continue to be, exposed to the simultaneous effects of multiple environmental changes. Plankton organisms form the base of pelagic marine food webs and are particularly sensitive to ecosystem changes. Thus, warming, acidification, and changes in dissolved nutrient concentrations have the potential to alter these assemblages, with consequences for the entire ecosystem.

Methodological considerations for estimating policy effects in the context of co-occurring policies.

Understanding how best to estimate state-level policy effects is important, and several unanswered questions remain, particularly about the ability of statistical models to disentangle the effects of concurrently enacted policies. In practice, many policy evaluation studies do not attempt to control for effects of co-occurring policies, and this issue has not received extensive attention in the methodological literature to date. In this study, we utilized Monte Carlo simulations to assess the impact of co-occurring policies on the performance of commonly-used statistical models in state policy evaluations.

Electronic cigarette use by and perceptions of middle and high school students in the United States.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) provide a novel source of nicotine and may lead to experimentation by adolescents and eventually to their use of conventional cigarettes. The National Youth Tobacco Survey collected information from a nationally representative sample of students in 2016 to determine their experiences with conventional cigarettes and e-cigarettes, their intentions to use these products in the future, and their perceptions of harm and addiction associated with these products. We analyzed these data with ordered probit regression models to determine possible associations with the intention to try e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes.

River discharge-related nutrient effects on North Sea coastal and offshore phytoplankton communities.

As a result of climate change, an increasing number of extreme weather events can be observed. Heavy precipitation events can increase river discharge which causes an abrupt increase of nutrient-rich freshwater into coastal zones. We investigated the potential consequences of nutrient-rich freshwater pulses on phytoplankton communities from three stations in the North Sea.

Additive impact of multiple point-of-sale tobacco control policies on youth tobacco-related outcomes.

Objectives: The tobacco industry utilizes tactics to increase youth awareness, exposure, access and use of tobacco. To address these tactics, municipalities in Massachusetts have passed point-of-sale policies including: 1) restricting flavored tobacco (FTR), 2) restricting cigar package sizes and prices (CPPR), 3) banning tobacco in pharmacies (PB), and 4) raising the minimum legal sales age of tobacco to 21 (MLSA 21). This study evaluated whether more policies, and a combination of policies addressing all three industry tactics, are associated with more favorable youth tobacco-related outcomes.
