A nearly two and a half year old boy was hospitalized after showing symptoms of disorientation and hallucination. The parents remembered the child playing with a bottle of Silomat cough drops, so that an intoxication was taken into consideration. After liquid/liquid extraction of a urine sample collected in hospital, the underivatized and the acetylated extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) using electron ionization (EI) as well as chemical ionization (CI).

Overexpression of the microsomal enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1, human gene HSD11B1 or SDR26C1) associates with the metabolic syndrome as well as some inflammatory diseases. HSD11B1 expression is known to be highly tissue-specific and driven by two distinct promoters, an aspect which to date has been studied very little. Here, we sought to assess differential promoter usage in various glucocorticoid target tissues and cell lines.

Inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are characterized by an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines. On the other hand, endogenous cortisol is regarded as physiological compound to combat inflammation. The local activation of glucocorticoids is mediated by 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11beta-HSD1) which increases cortisol, and 11beta-HSD2 which decreases cortisol concentrations.

We have developed a simple and efficient method for the covalent functionalization of detonation nanodiamond. After homogenization of the surface by borane reduction, the surface was modified with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane. Subsequent grafting of biotin yielded covalently biotinylated nanodiamond, which was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffractometry, thermogravimetry, and elemental analysis.
