Nutrient acquisition is crucial for sustaining life. Plants develop beneficial intracellular partnerships with arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) and nitrogen-fixing bacteria to surmount the scarcity of soil nutrients and tap into atmospheric dinitrogen, respectively. Initiation of these root endosymbioses requires symbiont-induced oscillations in nuclear calcium (Ca) concentrations in root cells.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the use of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) in pediatric heart transplant patients, focusing on incidence, contributing factors, and outcomes based on a large database from 2010-2020.
  • Among 4,321 primary heart transplants analyzed, 5.8% (249 patients) required MCS, with factors like congenital heart disease and older donor age linked to higher MCS need, while larger recipient size and better donor heart function correlated with lower needs.
  • The one-year survival rate for patients requiring MCS was significantly lower at 54.2% compared to 94.8% for those without, but those who survived the first year had favorable long-term outcomes, suggesting selective use of MCS

Advances in medicine allow children with previously fatal conditions to survive longer and present as transplant candidates; some requiring multiple solid-organ transplants (MSOT). There is limited data on clinical outcomes and no data on quality of life (QoL). In this mixed methods cohort study clinical outcomes from the NHSBT registry were analysed for all patients who received a kidney and one other solid-organ transplant as a child between 2000 and 2021 in the UK.
