Objective: Most patients who have an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implant do not receive life-prolonging therapy from it. Little research has been undertaken to determine which patients benefit the least from ICD therapy. As patients age and accumulate comorbidities, the risk of death increases and the benefit of ICDs diminishes.

Uric acid (UA) is excreted as an end product of protein metabolism in many reptiles, including some chelonians. Elevated plasma UA concentrations can occur due to many physiologic and pathologic changes, and determining plasma UA concentrations is part of a complete general health assessment in this taxon. UA concentrations are typically measured using benchtop chemistry analyzers, but point-of-care (POC) UA meters have also been developed for human use.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2023, two juvenile American black bears with severe musculoskeletal diseases were euthanized in Tennessee, marking a shift from previously reported traumatic causes of such conditions.
  • The first case involved an 11-month-old male with disproportionate dwarfism and joint laxity, suggesting possible chondrodysplasia or rickets, while the second case was a 14-month-old emaciated male showing osteoporosis due to malnutrition.
  • This report aims to raise awareness among wildlife agencies about these non-trauma-related musculoskeletal diseases, encouraging monitoring and evaluation to enhance understanding of their underlying causes.

Article Synopsis
  • - Preemptive therapy (PET) and letermovir prophylaxis are effective in preventing cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in the first 100 days after hematopoietic cell transplantation but can lead to late-onset CMV disease among survivors.
  • - A study of 2469 day 100 survivors revealed a 7.2% incidence of late CMV disease, with similar risks between PET and letermovir groups, and factors like posttransplant cyclophosphamide and steroid use linked to increased risk.
  • - Late CMV disease often arises from prolonged low-level viremia and is associated with higher mortality, highlighting the need for better prevention strategies in post-transplant care.
