Urine serotonin (5-HT)/creatinine was lower at day of life 3 in newborns with pulmonary hypertension compared with controls, while the percent change in the 5-HT metabolite, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA)/creatinine increased. We speculate that the changes in 5-HT and 5-HIAA reflect enhanced pulmonary 5-HT uptake and/or metabolism.

Serotonin (5-HT) is a bioamine that has been implicated in the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension (PH). The lung serves as an important site of 5-HT synthesis, uptake, and metabolism with signaling primarily regulated by tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH), the 5-HT transporter (SERT), and numerous unique 5-HT receptors. The 5-HT hypothesis of PH was first proposed in the 1960s and, since that time, preclinical and clinical studies have worked to elucidate the role of 5-HT in adult PH.

Purpose: The number of Canadians diagnosed with cancer, and subsequent demand for radiation therapy, are expected to increase over time. This study aimed to update our needs-based workforce planning model to ensure appropriate staffing levels in the future.

Methods And Materials: The supply of radiation oncologists, by age group, sex, and full-time equivalent status, was projected from 2020 to 2040 using a recursive-aging, input-output model developed with seeding parameters derived from national sources.

The manganese salt bath is considered a primary standard for determining the absolute emission rate of radionuclide neutron sources. The National Research Council of Canada has recently revived its manganese salt bath and a full description of the system is given here. The physical characteristics of the bath, as well as the methods for determining the efficiency of the bath system and the induced activity in the bath, are described.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a potent pulmonary vasoconstrictor and contributes to high pulmonary vascular resistance in the developing ovine lung. In experimental pulmonary hypertension (PH), pulmonary expression of tryptophan hydroxylase-1 (TPH1), the rate limiting enzyme in 5-HT synthesis, and plasma 5-HT are increased. 5-HT blockade increases pulmonary blood flow and prevents pulmonary vascular remodeling and PH in neonatal models of PH with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).
