Son Preference among Infertile Couples at the Fertility Clinic of Two Tertiary Hospitals in Enugu, Nigeria.

Background: Son preference is known to be prevalent in developing countries and has dire consequences for the family, particularly girls and women. It is speculated that the prevalence of son preference may be high among fertility clinic attendees, and that son preference may be the reason for seeking fertility care in Nigeria.

Objectives: To determine the prevalence and risk factors for son preference among fertility seekers in Enugu, Nigeria.

Beliefs, perceptions, and views of pregnant women about cesarean section and reproductive decision-making in a specialist health facility in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria.

Context: Through the process of socialization, women and men are conditioned to behave and play different roles in society. While the African culture "rewards" women who have vaginal birth despite the cost to their health, the burden of reproductive decision-making is placed on the menfolk. However, these seem to be changing.

Abnormality of pituitary gonadal axis among Nigerian males with infertility: study of patterns and possible etiologic interrelationships.

Background: Hormonal derangements potentially contribute to the diagnosis of infertility in over 60%-70% of couples investigated. Use of hormonal and antihormonal agents has achieved great success in the treatment of male infertility. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of hormonal abnormalities in males diagnosed with infertility.

Pain perception among parturients in Enugu, South-eastern Nigeria.

In order to evaluate pain perception among parturients in Enugu, South-east Nigeria, a cross-sectional questionnaire study of parturients who delivered vaginally in four health institutions in Enugu from 2 December 2005 to 21 January 2006 was administered. Data analysis was by means of percentages, means +/- SD, correlation coefficients, t-tests, chi2-tests, one-way ANOVA and other inferential statistics using the statistical package SPSS for MS Windows at the 95% confidence level. A total of 250 questionnaires were distributed, out of which 181 were correctly filled and returned for a response rate of 72.
