An integrated approach to understanding RF vacuum arcs.

Although used in the design and costing of large projects such as linear colliders and fusion tokamaks, the theory of vacuum arcs and gradient limits is not well understood. Almost 120 years after the isolation of vacuum arcs, the exact mechanisms of the arcs and the damage they produce are still being debated. We describe our simple and general model of the vacuum arc that can incorporate all active mechanisms and aims to explain all relevant data.

The Websites of Norwegian hospitals: do they meet national guidelines and patient's expectations?

In 2001, the Norwegian National Health Administration introduced a system that allows patients to choose the public hospital at which they are to be treated. This increased the importance of hospital Websites, as they are used by patients to select a service. In 2002 we rated the Websites of general hospitals in Norway in two ways.

Meeting the needs of rural populations through interdisciplinary partnerships.

This article describes the organization and outcomes of a Rural Health Outreach Initiative (RHOI) designed to increase collaboration between the medical education and health care delivery sectors to improve the quality of health care delivery and health outcomes in rural communities. Two inter-related partnership strategies were utilized in rural communities to address the health and social service needs of rural populations. The partnerships were created through the efforts of a rural health professions education program located in a community-based medical school.

The positive psychology of negative thinking.

As the positive psychology movement gains momentum, both within psychology and in the broader culture, it becomes increasingly important to ensure that the complexity of individual personality and psychological processes do not get lost in a "one-size-fits-all" approach to improving human functioning. In this article, we consider some of the ways that the costs and benefits of different kinds of optimism and pessimism may vary across different individuals, situations, and cultural contexts. We use defensive pessimism research to illustrate that there are times when pessimism and negative thinking are indeed positive psychology, as they lead to better performance and personal growth.

Inheritance of larval resistance to permethrin in Aedes aegypti and association with sex ratio distortion and life history variation.

The genetic mechanisms that confer larval permethrin resistance were investigated in two strains of Aedes aegypti, vectors of yellow fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever. Larval resistance to permethrin in an Ae. aegypti field-collected resistant Couva (R) strain was associated with the sex-determining locus by analysis of backcrosses to the susceptible Rockefeller (S) strain.
