Introduction: Hip fractures are an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Early surgery has been shown to reduce mortality rates and surgical complications. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade is a widely used tool to assess preoperative health of patients.

The Surrey Emergency Care System: a countywide initiative for change.

Modernisation is at the core of government policy. Within the NHS it has variously focused on accident and emergency, coronary heart disease, clinical governance and information technology although each strand has tended to operate in isolation. The Surrey Emergency Care System is a programme combining the strands into a single countywide initiative and that lays the technical and clinical foundations of a future integrated unscheduled care network.

The north-west region community PACS study.

A recent study in the West Surrey Health Authority demonstrated substantial advantages from viewing a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) as a whole-community asset, that is, a community PACS (CPACS). To test how this concept could be translated to other situations, the present study extrapolated the CPACS concept to the north-west healthcare region of the UK (population around seven million). A CPACS is a network covering multiple hospitals and community organizations, with a single archive and a broadband network to support it.
