Case Summary: A 56-year-old man developed life-threatening adverse reactions after fluoxetine was added to his previously prescribed regimen of buspirone and olanzapine. One week after starting fluoxetine 60 mg/day, the patient developed syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion and serotonin syndrome concurrently.
Background: Although recent studies have suggested that the cough reflex is more sensitive in women than in men, ethnic differences in cough reflex sensitivity have not previously been investigated.
Objectives: To evaluate ethnic and gender differences in cough reflex sensitivity.
Methods: We performed capsaicin cough challenge testing in 182 healthy volunteers of three distinct ethnic groups: Caucasian (white, non-Hispanic, of European origin), Indian (originating from the Indian subcontinent) and Chinese.

Objective: To assess whether routinely measuring serum beta-hydroxybutyrate (beta-OHB) concentration might help judge the severity of or assist in treating patients with suspected ketoacidosis.
Methods: Serum beta-OHB level was estimated by a standard enzymatic method in 64 episodes in adults admitted to a municipal hospital. Of the 85 specimens analyzed, 60 were taken before treatment from a nearly consecutive group of diabetic patients with ketosis, 21 were follow-up specimens, and 4 were from nondiabetic patients with ketosis.
