Head-mounted camera as a debriefing tool for surgical simulation-based training: a randomized controlled study in Senegal.

Introduction: Video feedback, particularly with a head-mounted camera, has previously been described as a useful debriefing tool in well-funded health systems but has never been performed in a low-resource environment. The purpose of this randomized, intervention-controlled study is to evaluate the feasibility of using video feedback with a head-mounted camera during intestinal anastomosis simulation training in a low-resource setting.

Methodology: This study recruited 14 first-year surgery residents in Senegal, who were randomized into control and camera groups.

Preoperative mortality risk evaluation in abdominal surgical emergencies: development and internal validation of the NDAR score from a national multicenter audit in Senegal.

Introduction: Abdominal surgical emergencies have a high mortality rate. Effective management primarily relies on the early identification of patients at high risk of postoperative complications. The objective of our study was to determine the prognostic factors associated with poor outcomes from abdominal surgical emergencies in Senegal and to establish a predictive score for mortality for preoperative risk evaluation (NDAR (New Death Assessment Risk) score).

Learning curve of laparoscopic appendectomy in a low-resource setting: a cumulative sum analysis of operative length.

Background: Cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis is a valuable tool for quantifying the learning curve of surgical teams by detecting significant changes in operative length. However, there is limited research evaluating the learning curve of laparoscopic techniques in low-resource settings. The objective of this study is to evaluate the learning curve for laparoscopic appendectomy within a single surgical team in Senegal.

Advancing access to care: An assessment of the prehospital system in Senegal.

Background: Most low- and middle-income countries do not have a mature prehospital system limiting access to definitive care. This study sought to describe the current state of the prehospital system in Senegal and offer recommendations aimed at improving system capacity and population access to definitive care.

Methods: Structured interviews were conducted with key informants in various regions throughout the country using qualitative and quantitative techniques.

Bezoar in Meckel's diverticulum: Case report and narrative review.

Introduction: Bezoars are a known cause of complications in Meckel's diverticulum. We present a case in which a bezoar in a Meckel's diverticulum resulted in intestinal obstruction. In addition, we conducted a narrative review to explore the association between Meckel's diverticulum and bezoars.
