Cigarette smoking has negative health implications for surgical patients. Smoking cessation before surgery reduces complications; however, information on the risks of smoking and benefits of quitting on surgical outcomes are not regularly provided to patients. It is especially important for smokers to quit now because they are at increased risk of serious complications of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Insulin and proinsulin in normal and chemical diabetic children.

Plasma levels of total immunoreactive insulin and immunoreactive proinsulin were studied in 10 normal children and 15 children with chemical diabetes ranging in age from 5 to 13 years. Eleven of the children with chemical diabetes demonstrated significantly elevated TIRI during fasting and following glucose administration. There was a delay in the increment of plasma TIRI in four children with chemical diabetes, but otherwise their TIRI levels were normal.

Gonadal function, testicular histology, and meiosis following cyclophosphamide therapy in patients with nephrotic syndrome.

Gonadal function, histology, and meiosis were studied in patients after puberty who had received cyclophosphamide in the treatment of nephrotic syndrome. Four males with minimal lesion nephrotic syndrome received cyclophosphamide, 2 to 4 mg/kg/24 hr, during periods ranging from 49 to 60 days and had normal semen at 15 3/12 to 22 3/12 years of age. Four males who received cyclophosphamide, 2 to 5 mg/kg/24 hr, during 89 to 489 days were azoospermic at 15 6/12 to 21 11/12 years of age.

Prognosis of acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis in childhood: prospective study and review of the literature.

Serial, clinical, clinicopathologic and histologic studies performed simultaneously following onset of PS-AGN in children for a period of up to 144 months revealed no evidence of progression to chronic glomerulonephritis. Although acute morphologic changes were more severe in renal tissue obtained from patients with AGN following streptococcal upper respiratory infection than following pyoderma, the acute manifestations in both groups subsided 6 to 12 weeks after onset. Cumulative morphologic healing occurred in 20% of patients at 24 months, in 43% at 48 months after onset of PS-AGN; 1 patient who was unhealed at 49 months was lost to follow-up.
