[Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria: A Rare but Treatable Cause of Acute Kidney Injury. Case Report].

Early recognition of acute kidney injury is essential to prevent progression to chronic kidney disease. We present the case of a 19-year-old man with multiple emergency department visits for fatigue, abdominal pain, and intermittent dark urine. Upon admission, he had pancytopenia with elements suggestive of hemolysis and acute kidney injury.

Isolation and Annotation of Azira, a CT Cluster Phage That Infects Gordonia rubripertincta.

Azira is a CT cluster actinobacteriophage that infects Gordonia rubripertincta NRRL B-16540. The genome contains 67 predicted protein coding genes, of which 31 have a putative function. Azira has a lysis cassette encoding two endolysins and three transmembrane proteins.

Vitamin C and thiamine for the treatment of refractory septic shock in surgical critically ill patients: a retrospective before-and-after study.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate whether early vitamin C and thiamine administration was associated with a lower 28-day and in-hospital mortality in surgical critically ill patients with refractory septic shock.

Methods: We performed a retrospective before-and-after study on patients with refractory septic shock. According to local protocol, hydrocortisone is initiated in case of refractory septic shock.

Spray-Drying Performance and Thermal Stability of L-Ascorbic Acid Microencapsulated with Sodium Alginate and Gum Arabic.

The potential of sodium alginate (ALG) and gum arabic (GA) as wall polymers for L-ascorbic acid (AA) encapsulation as a tool for their preservation against the thermo-oxidative degradation was investigated. The influence of such polymers used as wall material on the AA-content, size, encapsulation efficiency, encapsulation yield and thermo-oxidative stability were evaluated. The AA-microparticles were obtained using the spray-drying technique.

Partial scalar invariance and observed differences across gender in a reasoning test battery.

Background: The substantive basis of the Reasoning Test Battery (BPR) is the theory of the hierarchical organization of cognitive abilities and therefore, it combines a general cognitive factor and specific factors associated with abstract, numerical, verbal, practical, spatial and mechanical reasoning. The battery has three forms, covering an age range from 9 to 22 years.

Method: The present study analyzes the internal structure of the Basque version of the battery using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses.
