The QKd interval was utilized as a presumptive index of end-organ thyroid hormone effect to test the hypothesis that patients with panic disorder might have abnormal tissue-level responsivity to normal levels of peripherally circulating thyroid hormones. No significant differences in QKd intervals were found between 15 patients with panic disorder (230 +/- 50 msec) and 20 normal controls (224 +/- 29 msec) while drug-free. These findings suggest that patients with panic disorder have normal tissue-level responsivity to thyroid hormone.

Fatigue is a prominent disabling symptom in a variety of medical and neurologic disorders. To facilitate research in this area, we developed a fatigue severity scale, subjected it to tests of internal consistency and validity, and used it to compare fatigue in two chronic conditions: systemic lupus erythematosus and multiple sclerosis. Administration of the fatigue severity scale to 25 patients with multiple sclerosis, 29 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, and 20 healthy adults revealed that the fatigue severity scale was internally consistent, correlated well with visual analogue measures, clearly differentiated controls from patients, and could detect clinically predicted changes in fatigue over time.

A toxoid vaccine, composed of purified pertussis toxin inactivated with H2O2 (NICHD-Ptxd), was developed on the basis of evidence that serum neutralizing antibodies (antitoxin) would confer immunity to pertussis. In vivo and in vitro assays of NICHD-Ptxd showed only trace or nondetectable levels of pyrogenic, adenosine diphosphate-ribosyltransferase, binding and pharmacologic activities. Nevertheless, about 40% of the antigenicity of pertussis toxin was retained.
