Genome-wide association analysis of composite sleep health scores in 413,904 individuals.

Recent genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of several individual sleep traits have identified hundreds of genetic loci, suggesting diverse mechanisms. Moreover, sleep traits are moderately correlated, so together may provide a more complete picture of sleep health, while illuminating distinct domains. Here we construct novel sleep health scores (SHSs) incorporating five core self-report measures: sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, chronotype, snoring, and daytime sleepiness, using additive (SHS-ADD) and five principal components-based (SHS-PCs) approaches.

An essential role for TASL in mouse autoimmune pathogenesis and Toll-like receptor signaling.

TASL is an immune adaptor that binds to the solute carrier SLC15A4 and facilitates activation of the transcription factor IRF5 during Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling. Similar to IRF5 and SLC15A4, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within TASL have been implicated in increased susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in patients. However, the biological function of TASL in vivo and how SLE-associated SNPs increase disease risk is unknown.

Insomnia in Patients With Substance Use Disorders: Assessment and Management.

Insomnia, characterized by difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or poor sleep quality, is highly prevalent among individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs). The relationship between the 2 conditions is often bidirectional. We reviewed the impact of various substances (alcohol, stimulants, opioids, and cannabis) on sleep architecture and their potential to contribute to insomnia.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the experiences of underrepresented-in-medicine women applicants to surgical residency.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic brought additional challenges to the 2020-2021 application cycle. The objective of this study was to explore how such challenges altered the perceptions/motivations/concerns of applicants to surgical fields, particularly those self-identifying as women underrepresented-in-medicine (UiM).

Methods: An anonymous mixed-methods survey was electronically distributed to all medical student members of the Association of Women Surgeons between 10/1/2020-12/31/2020.

The 24 Annual Santa Fe Bone Symposium (SFBS) was held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, on August 2-3, 2024. This was a "hybrid" meeting, with in-person and real-time remote participants representing a broad range of geographical locations and medical disciplines. The focus was on new developments in the care of patients with osteoporosis, other metabolic bone diseases, and inherited skeletal disorders.
