Article Synopsis
  • This report presents the first documented case of a giant cell tumor in the larynx, diagnosed through molecular genetic analysis.
  • A 50-year-old non-smoking male experienced persistent hoarseness for 3 months, and imaging revealed a sizable tumor on his thyroid cartilage, leading to a total laryngectomy.
  • Detailed microscopic analysis showed a mix of mononuclear cells and osteoclast-like giant cells, with molecular testing identifying a significant mutation in the H3-3A gene.

Article Synopsis
  • Pseudogout is caused by calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals and mainly affects large joints, but a rare case of it was found in the middle ear, leading to hearing loss.
  • Diagnosing this condition can be tricky, often requiring imaging tests to rule out other issues like tumors, which may involve surgery and further testing.
  • Once the crystals are identified and removed, the hearing loss usually improves significantly.

Objective(s): The present study aims to evaluate the reliability and construct validity of the Czech version of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI-CZ) and determine the cut-off value to distinguish dysphonic patients from nondysphonic individuals.

Study Design: Prospective study, Parallel group design.

Methods: The study investigated 100 adult patients with dysphonia, divided into three groups based on the etiology of the voice problem (neurogenic, functional, and structural).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored whether ancrod, a drug that reduces fibrinogen levels, could safely treat sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) by improving cochlear blood flow, as disturbances in this microcirculation may lead to hearing loss.
  • - Conducted as a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, the research aimed to enroll 99 patients but ended early with only 31 participants, showing no significant difference in hearing improvement between the ancrod group and the placebo group.
  • - Although ancrod effectively lowered fibrinogen levels and had a favorable safety profile, the high placebo response rate made it difficult to assess the drug's true efficacy, indicating that future SSHL trials need to account for this phenomenon. *

Objectives: Unilateral vocal fold palsy independently of etiology results in glottic insufficiency leading to unfavorable short or long-term impact on voice quality. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of injection laryngoplasty using Radiesse® Voice and thyroplasty type I on glottic closure, voice quality and aerodynamics by comparing preoperative, short- and long-term results.

Materials And Methods: Data of 32 consent patients were reviewed between 2012 and 2023.
