Big brother: the effects of surveillance on fundamental aspects of social vision.

Despite the dramatic rise of surveillance in our societies, only limited research has examined its effects on humans. While most research has focused on voluntary behaviour, no study has examined the effects of surveillance on more fundamental and automatic aspects of human perceptual awareness and cognition. Here, we show that being watched on CCTV markedly impacts a hardwired and involuntary function of human sensory perception-the ability to consciously detect faces.

HIV genital shedding and safety of Carraguard use by HIV-infected women: a crossover trial in Thailand.

Objective: To evaluate the safety, including impact on genital HIV RNA shedding, of Carraguard vaginal gel in HIV-infected women.

Design: This is a randomized, controlled, crossover study of Carraguard in HIV-infected women in Thailand.

Methods: Each woman (CD4 cell count 51-500 cells/microl and not on antiretroviral therapy) used each treatment (Carraguard, methylcellulose placebo, and no-product) once daily for 7 days during each 1-month period (3-week wash-out).

Producing commercially attractive, uniform true potato seed progenies: the influence of breeding scheme and parental genotype.

The production of attractive, uniform true potato seed (TPS) progenies was investigated. Four breeding schemes were compared: intercrossing tetraploid cultivars (cv x cv); doubled dihaploids x cultivars (ddh x cv); cultivars x diploid unreduced-gamete producers (cv x FDR) and doubled dihaploids x diploid unreduced-gamete producers (ddh x FDR). Fifty three progenies and five clones were grown in a glasshouse in a randomised complete block design with three replicates of 25 plants per progeny and clone.
