Unlabelled: A fast-growing field of neuroscience and medicine is the treatment of disease via electrical stimulation of the peripheral nervous system. Peripheral nerve stimulation delivers stimulation to nerves of the periphery where the target nerve can and is often located deep within the abdomen. Long-term preclinical animal models that demonstrate the safety and/or efficacy of electrical stimulation have predominantly used a skull mount to connect to neural interfaces.

Combined optogenetic and electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve for selective control of sensory fibers.

Introduction: Electrical stimulation offers a drug-free alternative for the treatment of many neurological conditions, such as chronic pain. However, it is not easy to selectively activate afferent or efferent fibers of mixed nerves, nor their functional subtypes. Optogenetics overcomes these issues by controlling activity selectively in genetically modified fibers, however the reliability of responses to light are poor compared to electrical stimulation and the high intensities of light required present considerable translational challenges.

The American Psychological Association's Hoffman report allegations of my association with the "CIA torture" program.

Until now, I have not responded to the undocumented and untrue portrayal of me in the Hoffman report, or the newspaper and email accounts of my alleged role in "torture." I have waited several years because I believed that the American Psychological Association leadership would completely disavow the Hoffman report and find a way to restore my reputation as well as that of the other former American Psychological Association presidents and the small number of its senior staff who were also falsely accused. Although this has not yet happened, I remain optimistic that it will.

Missed antenatal depression among high risk women: a secondary analysis.

Psychiatrically high-risk women were recruited for a postpartum depression prevention trial. Participants were screened at entry (20-26 weeks gestation) by a psychiatrist prior to receiving randomized treatment. Of the 31 patients who did not complete the study, 10 (33%) were dropped because of diagnosed depression.

Health and behavior: The coming together of science and practice in psychology and medicine after a century of benign neglect.

For thousands of years, physicians had available only a few drugs with which to minister to patients and the practice of psychology was an integral and therapeutically powerful component in the practice of medicine. Thus, good "bedside medicine" consisting of empathy, compassion, and a nurturant attitude toward the ill individual was a major component of the physician's armamentarium until relatively recently. However, the explosion in scientific knowledge in biology, physiology, chemistry, and microbiology which began a century ago and has continued through the twentieth century helped produce several generations of physician specialists and subspecialists with little knowledge of the powerful role psychological factors play in health and illness.
