In this study, we use an integrative taxonomic approach to redescribe (Malhotra, 1983) (Cestoda: Bothriocephalidae), based on newly collected specimens from the type-host (Hamilton, 1822) (Cypriniformes: Danionidae) in Fulbari, Siliguri, West Bengal, India. The detailed morphological assessment, from whole mounts, histology and scanning electron microscopy, offers additional insights into the scolex structure, vitelline follicles, and egg morphology. Molecular data from this and previous studies corroborate the identity and systematics of as a bothriocephalid closely related to the Asian Fish Tapeworm, (Yamaguti, 1934).

Article Synopsis
  • Tapeworms called Caryophyllidea are found in certain types of fish and include about 130 known species, with more being discovered, especially in India.
  • Some species were combined into one, Lytocestus indicus, to see if there were too many names for similar organisms.
  • Researchers looked at new specimens and found that while they looked different based on how they were preserved, their DNA showed they were actually the same species, leading to most new names being grouped under L. indicus.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined how host length and infection site affect the interaction between parasites and Butter catfish (Ompok bimaculatus) in Mukutmanipur Dam Lake, analyzing 192 specimens through various statistical methods.
  • - One-way ANOVA found no significant differences in parasite numbers among different types of parasites (cestodes, nematodes, and trematodes), but PERMANOVA showed significant variations in parasite numbers based on the infection sites (intestine, mesentery, and body cavity).
  • - Despite significant differences in parasite numbers related to infection sites, linear regression analysis indicated that fish length did not significantly correlate with the abundance of any type of parasite.
