Strong Ground Motion Sensor Network for Civil Protection Rapid Decision Support Systems.

Strong motion sensor networks deployed in metropolitan areas are able to provide valuable information for civil protection Decision Support Systems (DSSs) aiming to mitigate seismic risk and earthquake social-economic impact. To this direction, such a network is installed and real-time operated in Chania (Crete Island, Greece), city located in the vicinity of the seismically active south front of the Hellenic Subduction Zone. A blend of both traditional and advanced analysis techniques and interpretation methods of strong ground motion data are presented, studying indicative cases of Chania shaking due to earthquakes in the last couple years.

Do Interventions Intended to Increase Female Medical Student Interest in Radiology Work? Preliminary Findings.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to share the preliminary findings after initiation of interventions at the medical school level, which have been suggested by the literature to increase female medical student interest in radiology at one institution. Additionally, the paper provides discussion of how to better future interventions for increasing female medical student interest.

Methods: Interventions to increase medical student exposure to radiology were implemented at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2012.

Lichtenstein technique for inguinal hernia repair using polypropylene mesh fixed with sutures vs. self-fixating polypropylene mesh: a prospective randomized comparative study.

Purpose: Chronic postoperative pain is probably the most significant complication of tension-free inguinal hernia repair as its presence can considerably affect the life quality of the patient. Different mesh materials and different surgical techniques for mesh fixation have been applied to reduce chronic postoperative pain, with controversial, nevertheless, results. The aim of this prospective randomized study was to evaluate the effect of a relatively new mesh with self-fixating properties, used to repair inguinal hernia with the Lichtenstein technique, on early and chronic postoperative pain.
