Article Synopsis
  • Recent research indicates that breast-conserving surgery (BCS) may enhance overall survival in early breast cancer, but its effectiveness in locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) after neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) is unclear.
  • In a study of 530 LABC patients treated with NAT, those who underwent BCS had better pathological complete response rates and significantly higher overall survival rates (81.5%) compared to mastectomy patients (62%).
  • The study concluded that BCS is safe for patients with large tumors and is linked to improved survival, while factors like lower BMI and achieving complete response contribute positively to outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • A new pathophysiologic approach to hyponatremia is emerging, allowing for better identification of its various causes, including a reclassification of cerebral salt wasting (CSW) to renal salt wasting (RSW).
  • RSW and SIADH have opposite treatment goals—restricting water for SIADH and administering salt water for RSW—yet both conditions present similar clinical symptoms, necessitating careful differentiation which can be complex.
  • Research has identified a biomarker, haptoglobin-related protein, in patients with neurosurgical conditions and Alzheimer's disease, helping to correctly diagnose RSW and improve treatment strategies, while addressing the broader implications of RSW in both hyponatremic and normonatremic

Background: Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is an important cause of morbidity in cancer patients. Breast cancer patients undergoing surgical treatment are at an increased risk of VTE. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of VTE in patients who underwent surgery for the treatment of breast cancer and to identify the related risk factors.
