Ninety-two adult human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with suspected herpes zoster were included in a study. The clinical diagnosis of herpes zoster was verified by examination of blister cell and fluid material or serum samples. Antigen detection by a direct immunofluorescence assay with a fluorescein isothiocyanate-labelled monoclonal antibody, virus isolation, and serologic methods (in-house varicella-zoster virus [VZV] immunoglobulin G [IgG] and IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and the commercial Enzygnost assay) were compared.

Article Synopsis
  • Rats were trained to differentiate between the selective 5-HT(1A) agonist 8-OH-DPAT and saline using a taste aversion method, showing that 8-OH-DPAT reduces preference for saccharin when paired with a sickness-inducing agent (LiCl).
  • Preference for saccharin significantly decreased in rats who received 8-OH-DPAT after LiCl treatments, while control rats showed no significant change, highlighting the agonist's specific effects.
  • Other drugs with a high affinity for 5-HT(1A) receptors also reduced saccharin preference in trained rats, while drugs with low affinity did not affect preference, demonstrating the effectiveness of two-bottle tests in assessing drug

In this study, two ester pro-drugs of dopamine (DA) were synthesized and evaluated. These derivatives were the monobenzoyl (MBDA) and dibenzoyl (DBDA) esters of DA. MBDA was 300-fold and DBDA was 20,000-fold more lipophilic than DA itself.
