Article Synopsis
  • - Neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, lead to neuron loss and significantly impact many lives, prompting the search for new therapies beyond current medications.
  • - Magnesium (Mg) is an essential mineral important for central nervous system health, but its specific role in human neurodegenerative diseases is not well understood.
  • - This review explores the connection between Mg levels and neurodegenerative disorders by analyzing biological samples from patients and animal model studies, suggesting that Mg may have neuroprotective properties; however, further research is needed for clarity on its therapeutic use.

Over the last 20 years, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has seen the development of various paresthesia-free paradigms. Recently, a novel modality has emerged (Fast-Acting Sub-perception Therapy, FAST) that engages the surrounding inhibition mechanism of action. We evaluated long-term, real-world outcomes of preferential FAST-SCS use in patients with chronic pain.

Background: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are an increasingly common cause of infective endocarditis (IE) and lack recent data from large studies.

Objectives: Our aim was to describe the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of staphylococcal IE in a contemporary nationwide cohort study, while comparing coagulase-negative staphylococcal IE (CoNSIE) to IE from Staphylococcus aureus (SAIE), and among IE caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis (SE), S. lugdunensis (SL), and other CoNS.

Loneliness significantly impacts the mental well-being of older adults, prompting an examination of psychological predictors and buffering factors associated with it in this demographic. A cross-sectional study involving 246 community-dwelling older adults was conducted. The UCLA Loneliness Scale identified predictors of loneliness, including negative mood, hopelessness (negative future expectations and loss of motivation), and despair.

Unlabelled: Agroforestry systems promise a high multifunctionality providing cash and subsistence yields as well as other ecosystem services. Such land systems may be particularly promising for smallholders in tropical landscapes due to high labour intensity and productivity on limited land. Focusing on Madagascar, we here describe the history of agroforestry in the country and review the current literature on agroforestry outcomes as well as factors promoting and hindering agroforest establishment and maintenance.
