This review aims to compile sparse information on the ecology of freshwater heterotrophic euglenoids and synthesize the main phenomena and hypotheses from published results. Apparently, heterotrophic euglenoids play a very important role in the nutrient flow of water ecosystems and are irreplaceable heterotrophic contributors in benthic communities, as their total biomass is by far the largest among heterotrophic flagellates. Even though they are obviously a very crucial part of the diversity of freshwater heterotrophic protists, and likely the most represented (in terms of biovolume) group of heterotrophic flagellates, there have been only a few attempts to elucidate their ecological preferences, roles, niches, and importance.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe aim of this work was to determine the changes in the chemical and physical-mechanical properties of gauze compresses under the influence of various sterilizations. Gauze compresses are made of cotton; therefore, all methods used focused on cotton. The methods used to test possible damage to cotton materials (pH value (pH paper, KI starch paper), yellowing test, Fehling reaction, reaction to the formation of Turnbull blue (Berlin blue), microscopic staining with methylene blue and swelling reaction with Na-zincate) did not show that the sterilizations affected the cotton compresses.

The checklist includes 189 taxa in 28 genera: Anisonema (10), Astasia (26), Atraktomonas (1), Calycimonas (2), Chasmostoma (1), Dinematomonas (3), Distigma (8), Dylakosoma (1), Entosiphon (4), Euglena (1), Gyropaigne (1), Heteronema (19), Jenningsia (11), Khawkinea (1), Lepocinclis (1), Menoidium (7), Neometanema (3), Notosolenus (18), Petalomonas (40), Phacus (1), Ploeotia (2), Pseudoperanema (7), Rhabdomonas (5), Scytomonas (1), Sphenomonas (5), Teloprocta (1) Tropidocyphus (1), Urceolus (4), and 4 species of uncertain identity. In addition, a general description of habitat types in which the taxa were found and a review of the current taxonomy and nomenclature of included taxa are provided.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis report describes the discovery of the rare euglenoid taxon Trachelomonas bituricensis var. lotharingia in a small mesotrophic pond in the Czech Republic. Only limited data are available on the distribution of this taxon as same as for typical variety of Trachelomonas bituricensis, even though this taxon is morphologically very well defined.
