A surface urban heat island (SUHI) is a phenomenon whereby temperatures in urban areas are significantly higher than that of surrounding rural and natural areas due to replacing natural and semi-natural areas with impervious surfaces. The phenomenon is evaluated through the SUHI intensity, which is the difference in temperatures between urban and non-urban areas. In this study, we assessed the spatial and temporal dynamics of SUHI in two urban areas of the French Guiana, namely Ile de Cayenne and Saint-Laurent du Maroni, for the year 2020 using MODIS-based gap-filled LST data.

Conditional expression systems are of pivotal importance for the dissection of complex biological phenomena. Here, we describe a novel EBV-derived episomally replicating plasmid (pRTS-1) that carries all the elements for conditional expression of a gene of interest via Tet regulation. The vector is characterized by (i) low background activity, (ii) high inducibility in the presence of doxycycline (Dox) and (iii) graded response to increasing concentrations of the inducer.

Signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1), a transcription factor known to participate in antiviral responses, acts as a tumor suppressor inhibiting cell growth and promoting apoptosis. To study the role of STAT1 in DNA damage-induced apoptosis in B lymphocytes, its active form, STAT1alpha, was specifically inhibited by the overexpression of STAT1beta, the STAT1alpha truncated inhibitory isoform. An episomal vector with a tetracycline-inducible bidirectional promoter was created to induce the expression of 2 proteins, STAT1beta and enhanced green fluorescence protein (EGFP).

Burkitt Lymphoma (BL) cells are highly sensitive to suboptimal growth conditions and undergo apoptosis when seeded at low cell density or reduced serum concentration. Irradiated fibroblasts or a mix of pruvate, alpha-thioglycerol, and bathocuproine disulfonate can protect BL cells from apoptosis induced by lowering cell density or serum concentration by promoting cystine uptake in the cells. The availability of cystine is the limiting factor for glutathione biosynthesis in BL cells and thus for the ability of the cells to cope with oxidative stress.

The endogenous essential light chain (LC17) of myosin from intestine smooth muscle was replaced with mutated essential light chains prepared using recombinant techniques. Complete exchange was observed with histidine-tagged derivatives of LC17a, LC17b and E122A-LC17a (LC17a and LC17b are the usual constituants of smooth muscle myosin), with small changes in the ATPase activity of reconstituted myosins. Much less exchange was observed with the light-chain derivative lacking the last 12 amino acid residues, demonstrating the importance of this segment, which may act as one arm of a pair of pincers to bind the myosin heavy chain.
