Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to assess the impact of oligo fucoidan from brown seaweed on the quality of life of cancer-afflicted dogs undergoing chemotherapy, involving 100 dogs with a confirmed cancer diagnosis.
  • The dogs were divided into a treated group receiving oligo fucoidan (68 dogs) and a placebo group (32 dogs), with assessments every 2-3 weeks over 3 months, including blood tests and a Quality-of-Life Questionnaire by blinded veterinarians and owners.
  • While overall quality of life scores showed no significant difference between groups, 5 out of 23 specific metrics improved significantly in the oligo fucoidan group, and the treatment was found to be safe with minimal side effects.

Background: Epidemiologic studies suggest residential radon exposure might increase the risk of primary lung cancer in people, but these studies are limited by subject mobility. This limitation might be overcome by evaluating the association in pets.

Hypothesis: Primary pulmonary neoplasia (PPN) rate is higher in dogs and cats residing in counties with a high radon exposure risk (Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] zone 1) compared to zones 2 (moderate radon exposure risk) and 3 (low radon exposure risk).

Objectives: This manuscript reviews the current state of veterinary medical electronic health records and the ability to aggregate and analyze large datasets from multiple organizations and clinics. We also review analytical techniques as well as research efforts into veterinary informatics with a focus on applications relevant to human and animal medicine. Our goal is to provide references and context for these resources so that researchers can identify resources of interest and translational opportunities to advance the field.

Purpose: High calorie intake leads to obesity, a global socio-economic and health problem, reaching epidemic proportion in children and adolescents. Saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids from animal (lard) fat are major components of the western-pattern diet and its regular consumption leads to obesity, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, no clear evidence exists whether consumption of diet rich in saturated (SFAs) and monounsaturated (MUFAs) fatty acids has detrimental effects on cardiac structure and energetics primarily due to excessive calories.

Objectives: To determine whether breed affects the ability of murmur intensity to predict the severity of stenosis in dogs with pulmonic stenosis or subaortic stenosis.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective multi-investigator study of dogs with pulmonic stenosis or subaortic stenosis. Murmur intensity, assessed by a four-level classification scheme, was compared with echocardiographically-determined pressure gradient across the affected valve.
