It is crucial to understand the morbidity associated with treatments for young children with ependymoma given this is a high incidence age group also known to be at risk of poorer cognitive outcomes. This review aimed to identify the quality of existing evidence describing cognitive outcomes in children treated for ependymoma under 36 months of age with a particular focus on the impact of radiotherapy. Eight studies were identified.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with developmental amnesia (DA) have impaired episodic memory due to early hippocampal damage but retain good semantic memory.
  • A study tested two methods for supporting semantic learning in a young patient with DA: recognition-learning through multiple-choice tests and recall-learning through cued recall tests.
  • Results indicated that recognition-learning significantly helped the patient remember semantic information better than recall-learning, suggesting recognition can aid in learning for children with episodic memory challenges.

Article Synopsis
  • Craniopharyngiomas are rare tumors that make up about 80% of childhood tumors in the hypothalamic-pituitary region, which can lead to significant long-term health issues despite their benign nature.
  • Their location near critical brain structures like the visual pathways, hypothalamus, and pituitary gland complicates treatment and can result in neuroendocrine problems, even though survival rates are generally high.
  • In response to varying treatment approaches, a national initiative in the UK aims to create standardized, evidence-based guidelines for managing these tumors in children, developed by key medical organizations and using a specific methodology for consistency in care.

Background: Anxiety and depression are highly prevalent mental disorders which are associated with a considerable personal and economic burden. As treatment alone has a minimal impact on prevalence, there is now a growing focus on interventions which may help prevent anxiety and depression. Internet and mobile based interventions have been identified as a useful avenue for the delivery of preventative programmes due to their scalability and accessibility.
