Real-world implementation of the National Early Warning Score-2 in an acute respiratory unit.

Introduction: The National Early Warning Score-2 (NEWS-2) is used to detect deteriorating patients in hospital settings. We aimed to understand how NEWS-2 functions in the real-life setting of an acute respiratory unit.

Methods: Clinical observations data were extracted for adult patients (age ≥18 years), admitted under the care of respiratory medicine services from July to December 2019, who had at least one recorded task relating to clinical deterioration.

Prevalence and Incidence Rates of Dementia: A Nationwide Population-Based Study of Electronic Health Records in Israel.

Background: Data on the rate of dementia is essential for planning and developing appropriate services at the national level.

Objective: We report the prevalence and incidence of dementia, based on electronic health records available for the whole population.

Methods: This national dementia dataset was established as a part of the National Program to Address Alzheimer's and Other Types of Dementia.

Factors influencing survival among Kenyan children diagnosed with endemic Burkitt lymphoma between 2003 and 2011: A historical cohort study.

Discovering how to improve survival and establishing clinical reference points for children diagnosed with endemic Burkitt lymphoma (eBL) in resource-constrained settings has recaptured international attention. Using multivariate analyses, we evaluated 428 children with eBL in Kenya for age, gender, tumor stage, nutritional status, hemoglobin, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Plasmodium falciparum prior to induction of chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide, vincristine, methotrexate and doxorubicin) to identify predictive and prognostic biomarkers of survival. During this 10 year prospective study period, 22% died in-hospital and 78% completed six-courses of chemotherapy.

Identifying frail older people using predictive modeling.

Objectives: To determine whether a designation of frailty using the Adjusted Clinical Groups-diagnoses based computerized predictive model (ACG Dx-PM) can identify an elderly population who (1) have the clinical characteristics of frailty and (2) are frail as determined by the validated Vulnerable Elders Survey (VES), and to determine the ability of these tools to predict adverse outcomes.

Study Design: Secondary analysis of administrative and survey data.

Methods: Participants over age 65 years (n = 195) in an outpatient comprehensive geriatric assessment study at an Israeli health maintenance organization (HMO) were screened for frailty using the ACG Dx-PM and VES.

Primary care intervention programme to improve early detection of hearing loss in the elderly.

Objective: To improve audiology screening in general practice, using an intervention programme aiming to empower older adults and their general practitioners.

Methods: We conducted a quasi-experimental community study comparing 206 patients and two control groups (the first being 101 people registered with the same general practitioner, and the second 87 people registered with another general practitioner). Outcome measures were: rates of hearing tests in the six months before interview, and screening recommendation by the general practitioner.
