Background: In recent years, there has been an increased utilization of dual-mobility (DM) implants in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) to mitigate the risk of postoperative hip instability. This study aimed to present mid-term outcomes of DM bearings in primary THA using data from the American Joint Replacement Registry.
Methods: Screening was conducted on patients aged ≥ 65 years who underwent primary THA between 2012 and 2018.
Clams, razor clams and cockle are intertidal bivalve species collected on foot in the shellfish grounds of the Rías Altas (NW Spain). Spatio-temporal distribution of these bivalves are typically at the expenses of the environmental conditions of the region; however, the responses to the abiotic conditions are poorly understood. Using data from 6 species (Ruditapes decussatus, Venerupis corrugata, Ruditapes philippinarum, Cerastoderam edule, Donax trunculus and Solen marginatus) sampled in 51 intertidal shellfish grounds during 2007 and 2008, we characterized the influence of the environment (temperature, salinity, nutrient salts, suspended organic matter, or sediment granulometry and composition) on the distribution and size of these species through a comparative statistical analysis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLoop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) is a useful technique for detecting infectious microorganisms in human fluids since it performs similarly to conventional PCR, the results are obtained faster and no thermocyclers or complex devices are required. Since only two isothermal blocks (95 °C to lyse cells and 65 °C for DNA amplification) are needed, LAMP is particularly suited for applications in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). To validate such assumption, we first designed and tested Arduino-controlled LAMP thermoblocks to process a considerable number of samples simultaneously with a low-energy consumption to enable routine use under worst-case conditions (no main power source and low ambient temperatures).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe asymptotic homogenization method is applied to characterize the effective behaviour of periodic multi-laminated micropolar elastic heterogeneous composites under perfect contact conditions. The local problem formulations and the analytical expressions for the effective stiffness and torque coefficients are derived for the centrosymmetric case. One of the main findings in this work is the analysis of the rotations effect of the layers' constitutive properties on the mechanical response of bi-laminated composites.
