This review article will cover both general aspects of hand infections and the most common superficial hand infections. Hand and wrist infections are commonly encountered in clinical practice both by the generalist orthopaedic surgeon and the hand surgeon. Clinically, they appear as a spectrum, from easy to resolve superficial infections, to life and limb threatening deep infections (for example, necrotizing fasciitis).

The indication for total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) for primary and posttraumatic elbow arthritis has increased, however, its indication after infection remains elusive. Wound closure about the elbow increases the challenge of treating a previously infected elbow, often necessitating soft tissue coverage with local or regional flaps. We present a 75-year-old male patient with an elbow infection following a failed complex intraarticular fracture open reduction and internal fixation of the distal humerus.

Mazabraud syndrome was first described in 1926 by Henschen, consisting of the association between bone fibrodysplasia and one or more intramuscular myxomas. The study paper conducted by Mazabraud et al. in 1967, described an association between the two pathologies.
