Experimental infection of three indigenous breeds of sheep in Nigeria, namely the West African Dwarf (WAD), Yankasa and Ouda resulted in fatal disease with the Zinga Rift Valley Fever virus. Infected sheep of the three breeds responded by pyrexia within 24 h of infection, that lasted 6 to 7 days, but peaked between day 2 and 4 post-infection. Viraemia coincided with pyrexia and peaked (10(9) PFU/ml) 3 days p.

Seventy pregnant Nigerian women requiring oxytocin for the induction or augmentation of labour were randomized into two groups, one administered 5% glucose, and the other 0.9% saline as vehicle for oxytocin. Another group of seventy women who did not receive intravenous fluids in labour were included for comparison.

The comparison of the content of electrolytes and proteins in the serum of guinea fowl and Nigerian fowl showed that the former had significantly higher values for sodium, potassium, and albumin. The Nigerian fowl on the other hand exhibited higher values for calcium, chloride, bicarbonate, inorganic phosphate, total proteins, and globulins, which were also significant.

Twenty-four-hour urine samples were collected from 179 male and female medical students in Ibadan, and 112 medical students in Zaria. The values for 24-h urine volume, urinary electrolytes, urea and creatinine exhibited a skewed distribution and were normalized by logarithmic transformation. The geometric means values for the 24-h urine volume for the dry season were significantly less than those for the wet season in Ibadan and Zaria.
