- Cyclosporine A (CsA) is effective for treating ocular inflammation, but delivering it to the eye is challenging due to its hydrophobic properties.
- A new formulation using perfluorobutylpentane (F4H5) combined with ethanol (EtOH) was tested, showing better corneal penetration of CsA compared to the commercial eyedrop Ikervis.
- The F4H5/EtOH formulation achieved similar or greater CsA concentrations in ocular tissues while using a smaller dose, potentially reducing waste and lowering the risk of systemic side effects.
Purpose: Corticosteroids remain the mainstay therapy for uveitis, a major cause of blindness in the working age population. However, a substantial number of patients cannot benefit from the therapy due to steroids resistance or intolerance. Tacrolimus has been used to treat refractory uveitis through systemic administration.
