The treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been considerably transformed in the last couple of years. However, effective management of patients with CKD is still not achieved, despite clear guidelines promoting active screening of high-risk patients, immediate diagnosis based on laboratory markers, and early initiation or intensification of pharmacotherapy like sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, which showed reliable results in preventing disease progression, complications, and mortality. Following a recent initiative on early diagnosis, nephrology experts from Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, and Slovenia discussed the challenges and opportunities related to CKD treatment in the Balkan countries, also reflecting on the heterogenous socio-economic context of the region.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are widely used in electrochemical sensors due to their significant impact on the electroanalytical signal. However, there remain significant doubts regarding the origin of the improved electroanalytical response observed in CNT-based sensors, particularly concerning the precise role of CNTs in these systems. In particular, the origin of the electrochemical response is controversial, as it may be due to either electrocatalytic or non-electrocatalytic processes.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by persistent inflammation, joint pain, and progressive cartilage and bone erosion. Despite advancements in RA management with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biologics, some patients remain refractory to conventional treatments. Tetracyclines, such as minocycline and doxycycline, exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, making them potential supplementary treatments.

Background And Objectives: Regular physical activity (PA) and Mediterranean diet (MeDi) adherence independently improve glycemic control and clinical outcomes in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study examined the associations between PA, body composition (BC), MeDi adherence, and glycemic control in Dalmatian T2DM patients.

Materials And Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the University Hospital of Split (November-December 2023) during an open call for T2DM patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the essential oils from kumquat, a small citrus fruit, focusing on their chemical profile, bioactive components, and biological activities using various extraction methods (microwave-assisted distillation and Clevenger hydrodistillation).
  • It assesses the cytotoxic effects of kumquat essential oils on different cancer cell lines (HeLa, HCT116, U2OS) and a healthy cell line (RPE1), finding the oils showed notable cytotoxicity in cancer cells but less effect on healthy cells.
  • Besides cytotoxicity, the essential oils exhibited antioxidant and antibacterial activities, with major components like limonene remaining stable post-digestion, contributing to their potential for health benefits.
