A retrospective review was undertaken to determine the influence of preoperative alkaline phosphatase levels on the prognosis of patients who had undergone resection of liver metastasis from colorectal adenocarcinoma at Roswell Park Memorial Institute. From March 1967 to March 1985, 26 patients underwent laparotomy who were thought to have solitary liver metastasis. Twenty of these patients were divided into two groups: group A consisted of seven patients who survived at least 24 months without any evidence of disease and were free of disease at the time of this report.

The charts of 79 patients with a histologic diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal were reviewed to determine the incidence of synchronous and/or metachronous colon lesions. Forty-six patients underwent an adequate preoperative evaluation of the colon and rectum. Ten patients underwent colonoscopy, 33 patients underwent a barium enema, and three patients underwent colonoscopy and a barium enema.

A case of ruptured colon and massive faecal contamination of the peritoneal cavity after a difficult bowel movement is presented. A perforated peptic ulcer was suspected but a rupture of the rectosigmoid colon was found at operation. Surgical management included resection of the affected colon, proximal colostomy and closure of the distal end of the bowel.

A case of thrombo-angiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) in a 30-year-old man is reported. Irremediable gangrene necessitated amputation of both legs, and distal amputation of the fingers and thumb of the right hand.
