Novel and efficient copper-catalysed synthesis of nitrogen-linked medium-ring biaryls.

Herein, a new copper-catalysed strategy for the synthesis of rare nitrogen-linked seven-, eight- and nine-membered biaryl ring systems is described. It is proposed that the reaction proceeds through a highly activated intramolecularly co-ordinated copper catalyst. The process is technically simple, proceeds under relatively mild conditions, displays a broad substrate scope and forms biologically valuable products that are difficult to synthesise by other methods.

Correction of complex lower limb deformities by the Ilizarov technique: An audit of complications.

This is an audit of complications resulting from correction of complex lower limb deformities by the Ilizarov technique. 33 patients (40 bone segments) were reviewed and divided into 4 groups according to the type of surgery carried out: limb lengthening and/or correction of deformity, bone or joint stabilisation, treatment of nonunion or bone defect, angular and/ or rotation correction. Most minor complications were fixator specific.

Osteoprogenitor cells of mature human skeletal muscle tissue: an in vitro study.

The presence of osteogenic progenitors in human skeletal muscle is suggested by the formation of ectopic bone in clinical and experimental conditions, but their direct identification has not yet been demonstrated. The aims of this study were to identify osteogenic progenitor cells in human skeletal muscle tissue and to expand and characterize them in culture. Specimens of gracilis and semitendinosus muscle were obtained from young adults and digested to separate the connective tissue and satellite cell fractions.

Muscle fibre damage and regeneration resulting from surgical limb distraction.

Using an animal model of limb distraction, the extent of muscle fibre damage and atrophy resulting from distraction at two different rates (1.3 or 3.0 mm day(-1)) was investigated.
