Over a period of 30 years (1961-1991), 218 patients with recurrent anterior dislocation of the shoulder were operated on at the Naval Hospital of Greece using a modified Magnuson-Stack method. The modification involved transfer of the subscapularis tendon not only laterally to the bicipital groove, but also 1 cm distally (Karadimas et al. 1980).

Three of the groups were Greeks with normal knees (45 patients), knees already operated on for chondromalacia patellae (36 patients) and knees with a clinical diagnosis of chondromalacia patellae (57 patients). The other two groups comprised 58 African negroes and 51 Arabs, in all of whom a clinical diagnosis of chondromalacia patellae had been made.

Transfer of the subscapularis tendon using a slightly modified Magnuson-Stack procedure was done in 154 shoulders with recurrent anterior dislocation. A follow-up to two to twenty-two years (average, 7.6 years) revealed only three recurrences of the dislocation and no serious complications.
