Building egocentric models of local space from retinal input.

Determining the location of objects relative to ourselves is essential for interacting with the world. Neural activity in the retina is used to form a vision-independent model of the local spatial environment relative to the body. For example, when an animal navigates through a forest, it rapidly shifts its gaze to identify the position of important objects, such as a tree obstructing its path.

The impact of participatory action research and endogenous integrated soil fertility management on farm-gate dietary outputs in northern Tanzania.

In most developing countries, although agricultural extension and research devolved since 1980s to promote relevance, cost-effectiveness, ownership, and sustainability, participatory action research (PAR) have been run, albeit with limited empirical evidence on their impacts on farmers livelihoods. The study use a three-stage extended regression model (ERM) to estimate the effect PAR and the promoted agronomic practices on crop produce dietary outputs considering potential endogenous engagement, omitted variable bias, reverse causality, endogenous covariates, and factor simultaneity. Using a sample of 607 small family farms with varying levels of research engagement in the Northern Highlands of Tanzania, the study found that PAR was associated with increased farm-gate dietary outcomes: per-capita calories, proteins, and minerals produced by 139, 216, and 143 %, respectively, and consumption of farm-produced minerals by 74-200 %.

Rhodium(III)-catalyzed [3 + 2]-spiroannulation of 2-aryl-1,4-benzoxazines with 4-hydroxy-2-alkynoates has been developed for the synthesis of highly rigid spirolactones in good yields with high regioselectivity. The reaction proceeds through a cascade of C-H activation followed by C-H annulation and lactonization. In this approach, two C-C and C-O bonds are formed in a single step.

Adoption of improved soybean and gender differential productivity and revenue impacts: Evidence from Nigeria.

Despite the considerable soybean varietal improvement and dissemination efforts in Nigeria and other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, empirical evidence on farm-level yield and revenue impacts of improved soybean varieties (ISVs) from a gender perspective are limited. In this paper, we analyze the impact of the adoption of ISVs on soybean yield and net revenue, and the associated gender differential effects in northern Nigeria. We use the endogenous and exogenous switching treatment effects regression frameworks to estimate the impacts.
