  • Gender-based violence is a significant global issue affecting health, especially for sexual and gender minorities, who face additional barriers to support and are often excluded from research.
  • A study analyzed the guidelines on sexual and gender diversity from 16 academic journals focused on violence research, finding that while some journals acknowledge diversity, fewer provide comprehensive guidance for authors and reviewers.
  • To better capture the experiences of diverse populations in gender-based violence research, there needs to be improved direction from publishers for researchers to include and report on the complexities of gender and sexual identity.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is at epidemic levels across low-, middle-, and high-income countries, including Canada, where recent lifetime prevalence indicated that over 40% of women had IPV experiences. In response to this, Canada's federal government has made investments toward IPV prevention and response. We conducted a scoping review of English and French literature identified through searches of multiple databases and specific journals to assess the current state of IPV research in Canada.
