Article Synopsis
  • Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is associated with porcine-circovirus-associated diseases (PCVADs), and while vaccination helps control these diseases, it does not provide complete immunity and may lead to vaccine failure.
  • A study conducted in Colombia found that 82% of pigs and 92.9% of herds were infected with PCV2, with the PCV2d variant being the most prevalent.
  • Histopathological examinations revealed common lung issues, and the study suggested that bivalent vaccines offer better immune coverage compared to monovalent vaccines despite ongoing clinical cases of PCV2.

Article Synopsis
  • Eight porcine parvovirus species (PPV1 to PPV8) exist, but there's limited knowledge about their distribution and genetic differences, prompting this study.
  • Comprehensive genome analysis of PPVs from Colombia and GenBank data was conducted, involving the collection of sera from 234 gilts and extensive sequencing and phylogenetic analysis.
  • The study found that PPV3 was the most prevalent, with significant genetic differences identified among PPV species, contributing to better understanding and classification of these viruses in Colombian pig herds.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effects of cryolipolysis, a non-invasive fat reduction technique, on 30 overweight and obese women, focusing on body fat and lipid profiles under strict ethical standards.
  • Participants underwent three cryolipolysis sessions, with body composition and plasma lipid assessments conducted before and after the treatment.
  • Results showed a significant reduction in abdominal fat (4.1 kg) and BMI (0.7 points) as well as improvements in cholesterol levels, suggesting cryolipolysis may help reduce cardiovascular risks related to obesity beyond just cosmetic benefits.

Since PCV4 was first described in 2019, the virus has been identified in several countries in Southeast Asia and Europe. Most studies have been limited to detecting PCV4 by PCR. Thus, PCV4 has an unclear association with clinical disease.
