Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness and side effects of using oral theophylline to enhance seizure activity during electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in patients with insufficient seizures.
  • A retrospective review included 13 patients (ages 56-79) who received ECT at Hiroshima Citizens Hospital from 2014 to 2017, with results showing that all but one patient completed their ECT course, and most experienced improved seizure activity when theophylline was added.
  • The findings suggest that oral theophylline is a viable treatment option for enhancing seizure frequency in ECT patients, though one patient experienced memory disturbances.
