Analysis of dioxins, furans and DL-PCBs in food and feed samples from Lithuania and estimation of human intake.

The methods, validated for determination of dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans and dioxin like-polychlorinated biphenyls were applied for investigation of food and feed matrixes. Validation criteria on repeatability and reproducibility conditions comply with the requirements of European Commission. Validated methods were successfully applied for determination of PCDD/F and DL-PCB in fish, meat and feed using HRGC-HRMS.

Probability biases in genetic problem solving: a comparison of undergraduates, genetic counseling graduate students, and genetic counselors.

Heuristics are mental shortcuts that aid people in everyday problem-solving and decision-making. Although numerous studies have demonstrated their use in contexts ranging from consumers' shopping decisions to experts' estimations of experimental validity, virtually no published research has addressed heuristics use in problems involving genetic conditions and associated risk probabilities. The present research consists of two studies.

Focus groups of Y-K Delta Alaska Natives: attitudes toward tobacco use and tobacco dependence interventions.

Background: Tobacco dependence interventions developed for Alaska Natives are virtually nonexistent. Alaska Natives residing on the Yukon-Kuskokwim (Y--K) Delta in southwestern Alaska use a unique form of smokeless tobacco (ST) known as Iqmik. This study employed focus group methodology to explore attitudes toward tobacco use and tobacco dependence interventions among Alaska Natives residing on the Y-K Delta.

Beyond U0126. Dianion chemistry leading to the rapid synthesis of a series of potent MEK inhibitors.

Employing phenylmalonitrile dianion chemistry, a large number of analogues of MEK inhibitor lead SH053 (IC(50)=140 nM) were rapidly synthesized leading to single digit nM inhibitors, displaying submicromolar AP-1 transcription inhibition in COS-7 cells. Compound 41, exhibiting a MEK IC(50)=12 nM showed ip activity in a TPA-induced ear edema model with an ED(50)=5 mg/kg.

Psychosocial risk and protective factors for adolescent tobacco use.

Knowledge of risk and protective factors for adolescent tobacco use will lead to the development of improved intervention strategies to reduce/prevent tobacco use. Theory and empirical findings demonstrate the multivariate complexity of the etiology of tobacco use. Sociocultural, social/interpersonal, and intrapersonal factors act through mediated chains of ultimate, distal, and proximal influences.
